Today, I come to you, to inform you about a topic that many Christians whom I have met, have absolutely no idea is a bad thing. Maybe they just never thought about it. But, have you ever asked yourself where do Physics get their ability to foretell the future? Or, how do they know, what they know about cousin Eddie etc.? Well, where God’s word in concerned, this is not a new subject. It’s something that God sternly dealt with all the way back in the book of Leviticus (I’m sure even earlier). But, God refers to people who practice this as having a familiar spirit.
To my surprise, as I went to Webster’s Dictionary about the term I’m speaking on, Webster’s was pretty much on point in their definition in relation to the bible.

1 : a spirit or demon that serves or prompts an individual
2 : the spirit of a dead person invoked by a medium to advise or prophesy
Take a look at Leviticus 20;26-27 it refers to “mediums and familiar spirits” and forbids being involved with them, as they are an abomination to the Lord. The medium was one who acted as a “go-between” to supposedly contact or communicate with the dead, but in reality they were contacting demons who convinced the mediums that they were “familiar” and could be trusted and believed. The practices associated with mediums and familiar spirits were banned in Israel, and the punishment for practicing such things was death.
(Leviticus 20:26) And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.
27 A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.
(Deuteronomy 18:10-12) “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in [a] fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD”.
There are currently programs on television that dramatize people who practice this dark art. Maybe you’ve heard of, or watched the show MEDIUM.

Ok, those are examples of television dramas, but in reality, maybe you’ve seen The John Edward show (popular at one time, now off the air).

These practices are VERY common today and definitely ingrained into our society. So much so, little thought maybe given to it.
The problem is, that people who are genuinely Psychics (whether they know it or not), are actually getting their information from demonic sources. That is why God, commanded his people to stay separate from such practices. As Christians, in this world today staying informed is absolutely critical to keep ourselves from being spotted and blemished sheep.
We have all seen the extent of evil in this world today, why would we want to consult EVIL itself, to get a needed answer? Lord HELP US!

In the old testament, King Saul, made the tragic mistake of consulting evil to get an answer he needed. 1st Samuel the 28th chapter. The bible speaks of a time when the Philistine armies were gathered together for war against Israel. Saul, the King of Israel had fought battles victoriously with the Lord and counsel from the prophet Samuel. So he knew all too well the importance of having Gods blessing and direction. Unfortunately, for this battle, Samuel the Prophet had died AND because of his own disobedience, Saul was cut off from hearing the Lord.
So, did Saul repent for his behavior and restore his fellowship with the Lord? No. The King of Israel continued in his disobedience and sought a witch who dealt with familiar spirits. The purpose was to have the witch contact the dead spirit of Samuel to get direction for the war.
But, Saul had to go on the outskirts of town to find this woman because the Lord commanded that he cast out all witches and wizards from the land. Because he went against his own decree. Saul had to visit this woman in disguise. The witch successfully brought up the demonic version of Samuel the prophet. The bible continues…
(1 Samuel 28: 15) And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
16 Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?
Saul, got the horrible and tragic news he desired.
(1 Samuel 28: 20) Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.
Why was Saul so afraid and troubled? The familier spirit of Samuel prophecied Israel’s defeat in the battle and Saul’s horrible death. But, again. There was still time for Saul to repent and get right with the Lord. Sadly, Saul didn’t do that and the path of his destruction unfolded as the false Samuel said it would.
Evil, is EVIL! There’s nothing good about it! Knowingly opening oneself to the work of demons is an evil thing:
If you’re in desperate need of an answer in a time of trouble… seek the righteousness of God.
(1 Peter 5:6-8) Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Be sober, be vigilant, WATCH!
