Following God’s Financial Plan

January 31, 2010

READ | Acts 20:33-35

The Lord wants us to make wise decisions based on sound principles. But choices that follow His will aren’t always compatible with the world’s way of doing business. Some people may be surprised that the foundational concept of God’s financial plan is to give rather than to save or invest.

First, give sacrificially. When the average person decides how much to donate toward charity, he considers his income versus his expenses. He chooses an amount that feels comfortable. In contrast, a sacrificial offering can mean a believer follows the Holy Spirit’s leading to pledge resources beyond his means. Initially, some Christians may feel worried about exercising their faith in this way. But thankfully Philippians chapter 4:19 says God has promised to meet His children’s needs. God’s totally trustworthy.

Also, give compassionately. Psalm 24:1 tells us all resources belong to God. Believers with a generous spirit hold their material possessions loosely. They desire to use their share of the Lord’s wealth to spread His blessing. A missionary, charity, or pastor does not have to beg them to part with their money.

God’s financial plan differs from any we’ll see in the world. But His principles have proven effective. The Bible and church history show this for thousands of years. His followers have chosen to give from a compassionate heart and a sacrificial spirit. And He rewards them with increased faith and enough material goods to meet their needs

The Lord our Righteousness.

(Jeremiah 23:6)

It will always give a Christian the greatest calm, quiet, ease, and peace, to think of the perfect righteousness of Christ. How often are the saints of God downcast and sad! I do not think they ought to be. I do not think they would if they could always see their perfection in Christ. There are some who are always talking about corruption, and the depravity of the heart, and the innate evil of the soul. This is quite true, but why not go a little further, and remember that we are perfect in Christ Jesus. It is no wonder that those who are dwelling upon their own corruption should wear such downcast looks; but surely if we call to mind that Christ is made unto us righteousness, we shall be of good cheer. What though distresses afflict me, though Satan assault me, though there may be many things to be experienced before I get to heaven, those are done for me in the covenant of divine grace; there is nothing wanting in my Lord, Christ hath done it all. On the cross he said, It is finished! and if it be finished, then am I complete in him, and can rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory, Not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith. You will not find on this side heaven a holier people than those who receive into their hearts the doctrine of Christ’s righteousness. When the believer says, I live on Christ alone; I rest on him solely for salvation; and I believe that, however unworthy, I am still saved in Jesus; then there rises up as a motive of gratitude this thought-Shall I not live to Christ? Shall I not love him and serve him, seeing that I am saved by his merits? The love of Christ constraineth us, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves but unto him which died for them. If saved by imputed righteousness, we shall greatly value imparted righteousness.

N. Korea Arrests Another American

January 30, 2010

By Ethan Cole|Christian Post Reporter |Fri, Jan. 29 2010 11:43

North Korea said Thursday that it has arrested an American for trespassing on its territory from China.

The announcement, made through the state media, KCNA, said the American illegally entered the country on Monday and is undergoing interrogation. Both the State Department and the South Korean government said they do not have any further details regarding the North Korean report.

This week’s arrest marks the second time an American was detained by North Korea within a month. North Korea announced on Dec. 29 that it had arrested an American for illegally crossing into the country from China. The first detained American is widely thought to be Robert Park, a Korean-American missionary who entered the country on Christmas to urge the North Korean Leader Kim Jong-Il to repent and take measures to respect human rights.

According to South Korean activists, Park had crossed the frozen Tumen River Christmas evening carrying a Bible and a letter addressed to Kim Jong-Il.

The letter, a copy of which was posted on the Seoul-based civic group Pax Koreana Web site, reads: “He (God) loves you and wants to save you and all of North Korea today.”

“Please open your borders so that we may bring food, provisions, medicine, necessities, and assistance to those who are struggling to survive,” the letter urged. “Please close down all concentration camps and release all political prisoners today, and allow care teams to enter to minister healing to those who have been tortured and traumatized.”

There are about 160,000 political prisoners in prison camps across North Korea, according to South Korean and American government estimates based on testimonies from former prisoners. Among the political prisoners are an estimated 40,000 to 60,000 Christians, according to Open Doors USA.

Open Doors has given North Korea the undesirable title of the world’s worst persecutor of Christians for eight straight years.

The totalitarian regime bans Christianity and has publicly executed citizens found with a Bible.

The United States has said it is working to find out more about Park’s situation, but it has no direct diplomatic relations with North Korea. The Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang looks after Washington’s interest in North Korea and is working on behalf of Washington to find out more information.

Open Doors encourages Christians around the world to join believers inside North Korea to pray for the country’s freedom during several prayer campaigns that are scheduled to take place this year.

Spiritual Shortsightedness

January 30, 2010

READ | Genesis 25:28-34

In a moment of weakness, we have the potential of making mistakes with longlasting consequences. Esau did when he sold his birthright—which gave him authority over his family and a double portion of the inheritance—for a bowl of soup. His error may seem foolish, but all of us can land in situations where good sense and spiritual commitment are undermined by our frailty.

One effective defense against temptation is to know when we are weak. Satan often strikes after waiting for us to reach our physical and emotional limits. He rightly reasons that we will lack the resources to resist what he offers, which he tailors to our perceived need. Wise believers avoid becoming too hungry, angry, lonely, or tired (HALT). Letting oneself reach such extremes opens the door for Satan’s short-term solutions, like an unwise business deal or an unsuitable marriage partner. Keep in mind that his plans will likely have a high price that must be paid for a long time.

Many people have “sold” their spiritual birthright—namely, God’s plan and blessings for them—because they never stopped to consider the consequences of a short-term solution. Believers should make a habit of questioning their decisions:.

What will the consequences be if I make this choice? How will what I’m about to do affect my relationship with the Lord? My family? My church? Will I be pleased tomorrow with what I am doing today? When we are accustomed to evaluating decisions in this way, we will be less likely to succumb to Satan’s persuasion in our weak moments.

“God Has a Plan for You”

January 29, 2010

by dale d. hastie

*Scriptures from the King James Version except where indicated

There is a beginning for everything in life. A humble starting place that gradually leads to the fulfillment of God’s purpose and plans for our existence.

 READ /GENESIS 37:1 – 50:26

…Joseph had a dream that saw him into a role as the Prime Minister of Egypt.

A position that now would equate to being the Presidents right hand man.  But, the path Joseph’s life took between the vision and the fulfillment was rocky and uncertain.

Joseph diligently served his father as a young man. Joseph had literal dreams of becoming greater than all his siblings. Even greater than his own father, who was head and patriarch of his family. But, his life played a larger role than maybe he himself may have realized at that time. And the same thing often applies to us. We may have a dream or vision that somehow never escapes our thinking. Although cloudy, the idea persists within the heart and mind. But, like with Joseph we find that circumstances have left us stranded in a pit.

His brothers were already swelled with jealousy because of the bond Joseph had with his father Jacob. Now, upon hearing this brats delusions of grandeur,(they may have thought to themselves) they devised to cast their little brother into a pit and later sell him into slavery.

The path of our lives may take multitudes of twists and turns BUT one factor remains true… and that is the Lord is unchanged. He is the rock that’s higher than we are. And that’s who Joseph continually put his trust in. Honoring God in every difficult situation. He chose to obey God even when sinful opportunities presented themselves. Obediently identifying them as sin and rejecting its poison no matter the cost.

(Genesis 39:7-10) 7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.

8 But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;

9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

10 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

Joseph later found himself in the Pharaoh’s prison falsely accused of rape. The very idea that he wouldn’t give into her advances, angered the master’s wife…all because he honored his God more than sin.

But, even in prison (falsely accused) Joseph maintained his integrity. He maintained his faithfulness to the Lord. Joseph was promoted within the prison also, and later became known for his gift of correctly interpreting dreams.

The natural gifts that the Lord places within our lives have a platform in which to be used. That’s why we should NEVER take our natural gifts and talents for granted. Maybe, our gifts are in a process of refinement at the moment. Or, maybe they have come to full maturity. No matter where you currently find yourself…KNOW that God has a divine purpose you.

(Ephesians 2:10) For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

One day, Joseph’s gifts and talents were eventually needed by the Pharaoh. He correctly, interpreted Pharaoh’s haunting dreams. Which, opened the door for Joseph becoming a steward over everything in Egypt. Yes, he was elevated to a position of authority, second only to the Pharaoh himself.

Again, we should never take our lives or the situations before us for granted. God maybe allowing certain aspects of our lives (situations) to shape us or guide us into an area where our abilities are needed. Trust in him who is able. God is able.

Be encouraged no matter where you are in the journey.

Pro-Choice Groups Petition Against Tim Tebow Super Bowl Ad

January 28, 2010

 By Eric Young|Christian Post Reporter

Mon, Jan. 25 2010 11:53 PM EDT

Pro-choice women’s groups are rallying their supporters to convince CBS, the NFL, and Super Bowl advertisers to stand against the “anti-choice” Super Bowl ad that will feature college football star Tim Tebow and his mother.

“CBS’s recent decision to air an anti-choice advertisement ad during Super Bowl XLIV was outrageous,” stated the Women’s Media Center in a letter to potential petition signers.

“Even worse is the network’s about face from its own policy of rejecting controversial Super Bowl ads,” it added. “The Women’s Media Center, and organizations dedicated to reproductive rights, tolerance, and social justice, are urging the network to immediately cancel this ad.”

Earlier this month, Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Focus on the Family announced its intent to broadcast its first Super Bowl ad during CBS Sports’ coverage of the game at Dolphin Stadium in South Florida.

The 30-second spot from the international family-help organization will feature Tim Tebow and his mother, Pam, who will share a personal story centered on the theme of “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life.”

“The Tebows said they agreed to appear in the commercial because the issue of life is one they feel very strongly about,” Focus on the Family reported.

Though the exact content of the ad has not been revealed, many are speculating that story shared will be about Pam Tebow’s refusal to have an abortion while she was pregnant with Tim despite having suffered from a life-threatening infection at the time.

”Tim and Pam share our respect for life and our passion for helping families thrive,” commented Focus on the Family president and CEO Jim Daly.

Less than a week after Focus on the Family’s announcement, CBS officials gave initial approval for the ad, suggesting that the commercial is in line with its policy and steers clear from a “current controversial issue of public importance” such as abortion, which Focus on the Family’s “culture action” arm is widely known for being strongly and vocally opposed to.

Though Focus on the Family works to strengthen, defend and celebrate the institution of the traditional family, the organization is best known for the efforts of Focus on the Family Action, which works to protect life, marriage, and religious liberties.

As a separate legal organization, Focus Action works to inform, inspire and rally pro-family people when it comes to the “moral, cultural and political issues that threaten our nation.”

Focus on the Family, on the other hand, “is about nurturing that desire [to help families thrive] and strengthening families by empowering them with the tools they need to live lives rooted in morals and values.”

Despite the distinction, groups such as the Women’s Media Center are sending their complaints and urging others to do the same, asserting that any advertising promoting Focus on the Family’s agenda should be refused.

“Focus on the Family has waged war on non-traditional families, tried its hand at race baiting during the 2008 election, and is now attempting to use the Super Bowl to further ramp up the vitriolic rhetoric surrounding reproductive rights,” they claim in a letter to CBS’s board and executives, the NFL, and Super Bowl advertisers.

“By offering one of the most coveted advertising spots of the year to an anti-equality, anti-choice, homophobic organization, CBS is aligning itself with a political stance that will alienate viewers and discourage consumers from supporting its shows and advertisers,” they add. “The decision to air this ad would be ethically, economically and politically disastrous for CBS.”

According to the Women’s Media Center, the content of Focus on the Family’s ad “endangers women’s health, uses sports to divide rather than to unite, and promotes an organization that opposes the equality of Americans based on gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and reproductive freedom.”

Though the feminist group has yet to see the commercial, it claimed that the ad “is surrealistic in its argument that a woman who chooses not to have a child may be depriving the Super Bowl of a football player.”

“It uses one family’s story to dictate morality to the American public, and encourages young women to disregard medical advice, putting their lives at risk,” it added.

After noting CBS’s well-documented history of prohibiting advocacy ads it deems controversial – including its rejection ads from organizations such as PETA, MoveOn.org, United Church of Christ, “and even ones that carry only an ‘implicit’ endorsement for a side in a public debate” – as well as the “anti-abortion vitriol” that has resulted in escalated violence against reproductive health service providers and their patients, including the murder of late-term abortionist George Tiller during a Sunday morning service at his church, the group expressed hope that CBS would not to be associated with “this brand of un-American hate.”

“CBS executives have indicated in the past that they would not air Super Bowl ads where ‘substantial elements of the community (are) in opposition to one another,’” the letter adds, citing from CBS’s well-known policy.

“Women comprise 40% of Super Bowl viewers. If CBS airs this ad, they will be throwing these women under the bus,” they concluded.

Amid concerns, a network spokesman, Dana McClintock, has told the press that CBS would ensure that any issue-oriented ad was “appropriate for air.”

Gary Schneeberger, a spokesman for Focus on the Family, meanwhile insisted that there’s “nothing political and controversial about it (the ad).”

“When the day arrives, and you sit down to watch the game on TV, those who oppose it will be quite surprised at what the ad is all about,” he told The Associated Press.

“We’re trying to celebrate families,” he added.

This year’s Super Bowl, which pits the Indianapolis Colts against the New Orleans Saints, will kick off at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 7.

Super Bowl broadcasts are typically viewed by over 90 million people each year.

Charles Spurgeon Devotional 01-28-2010

But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

(Luke 2:19)

There was an exercise, on the part of this blessed woman, of three powers of her being: her memory-she kept all these things; her affections-she kept them in her heart; her intellect-she pondered them; so that memory, affection, and understanding, were all exercised about the things which she had heard. Beloved, remember what you have heard of your Lord Jesus, and what he has done for you; make your heart the golden pot of manna to preserve the memorial of the heavenly bread whereon you have fed in days gone by. Let your memory treasure up everything about Christ which you have either felt, or known, or believed, and then let your fond affections hold him fast for evermore. Love the person of your Lord! Bring forth the alabaster box of your heart, even though it be broken, and let all the precious ointment of your affection come streaming on his pierced feet. Let your intellect be exercised concerning the Lord Jesus. Meditate upon what you read: stop not at the surface; dive into the depths. Be not as the swallow which toucheth the brook with her wing, but as the fish which penetrates the lowest wave. Abide with your Lord: let him not be to you as a wayfaring man, that tarrieth for a night, but constrain him, saying, Abide with us, for the day is far spent. Hold him, and do not let him go. The word ponder, means to weigh. Make ready the balances of judgment. Oh, but where are the scales that can weigh the Lord Christ? He taketh up the isles as a very little thing:-who shall take him up? He weigheth the mountains in scales-in what scales shall we weigh him? Be it so, if your understanding cannot comprehend, let your affections apprehend; and if your spirit cannot compass the Lord Jesus in the grasp of understanding, let it embrace him in the arms of affection.

Investing in Eternity

READ | Matthew 28:18-20

The Christian life is active—one dedicated to working, serving, sharing, and helping. Too often, we think that being a Christian simply means showing up for church each Sunday morning and dropping something into the offering plate. That’s a good habit, but if this is the sum total of your Christian life, you’ve missed the mark.

There is a call that Jesus Christ put on all those who would follow Him. That is, He has called us go into the world and make disciples through baptism and teaching. You may say, “Well, that applies just to ministers and missionaries, right?” No. It’s is the responsibility of everyone who claims the name of Jesus.

Just look at first word of Matthew 28:19. What does Jesus say? He says, “Go!” In today’s terms, He’s saying, “Get off the couch! Turn off the TV! Close the computer! Get up, look at the world around you, and tell someone about Me!”

This is not a suggestion. Nor is it a word to only a handful of believers. If you have been saved by the blood of Christ, then Jesus is talking to you! Making disciples doesn’t mean you have to quit your job and become a full-time missionary to a remote part of the globe. But you could walk outside, knock on a neighbor’s door, and demonstrate Christ to him. You don’t need a show-stopping sermon to minister to others; you need simply a willing and open heart.

What can you do right now to “go . . . and make disciples”? Think about things you can do today to respond to God’s call on your life.

How God Reveals Himself

January 27, 2010

READ | Romans 1:18-21

Look at the delicate veins of an oak leaf, and you see God’s beauty. Observe the storm-whipped surf beating against a beach, and you witness His power. The Lord’s sense of order is revealed in the march of the seasons and the precise tilt and turning of the earth. People need to look no farther than nature to understand that God is real.

The book of Romans tells us the Lord’s revelation in nature renders inexcusable those who would deny His existence. There’s no reasonable explanation for the creation of the material universe other than an omnipotent God putting it all together. The matter and fuel for a “big bang” had to come from Someone.

But nature can’t give us a full revelation. Creation does not show the Lord’s holiness or eternity. That’s why He gave us His Word. The Bible reveals God’s character, records His laws, and explains His expectations for the faithful. In its pages, we can learn about our Father and the kind of life He wants us to lead. 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.”

Scripture teaches about the living Word—Jesus—who is the full revelation of God. Our heavenly Father wanted to ensure that humanity could know Him intimately. So, He sent His Son, clothed in flesh, to make Himself known. Jesus said, “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.” (John 14:7). Spend time in Bible Study and prayer to know your Father better.

Christian Apologists: Be Careful of Oprah’s Spiritual Teachings

January 26, 2010
By Michelle A. Vu|Christian Post Reporter
Mon, Jan. 25 2010 01:39 PM EDT

   josh mcdowell dave sterett

Vienna, VA. – She is persuasive, influential and does a lot of good, but Christians should be careful when Oprah speaks about spirituality, warned two apologists who recently co-authored a book on the subject.

To a crowd of more than 1,500 people at McLean Bible Church outside of Washington, D.C,. on Friday evening, renowned apologist Josh McDowell and up-and-coming apologist Dave Sterrett explained the danger of adopting Oprah’s spiritual teachings from a Christian perspective.

They pointed out that the talk show queen and the spiritual teachers she promotes teach pantheism – God is all and all is God – and that there are multiple paths to reach God. She also emphasizes that people should carry out their inner longings instead of restraining themselves if the act is said to be a sin by the Bible.

“Here is where you got to be careful,” emphasized McDowell. “Not only Oprah but others use Christian or religious terminologies that Christians would accept as Christian.”

“The Christian God is a personal creator God which all truth resides, who is totally outside of ourselves and outside of our universe,” explained the best-selling author of More Than a Carpenter. “When Oprah and others refer to God, it is an impersonal force. And I think one way that comes out is that they will say, ‘Look within you and find yourself from within. Find that God-consciousness. That is God.’”

In their book, “O” God: A Dialogue on Truth and Oprah’s Spirituality, the apologists warn that Oprah “uses the language of the Bible and Christian traditions” but mixes that with other traditions to “create a hodgepodge of personalized faith.”

They point out in their book that Oprah, during her first A New Earth Web seminar on March 3, 2008, told participants that Christ came to show people that they can discover their own “Christ-consciousness.”

One of the main characters in the book, Lindsey, who is struggling to make sense of Christianity and Oprah’s spirituality, says at one point:

“Maybe Jesus was no more God than you and I are. Maybe we’re all just part of the UltimateBeing that we call God or Universal Energy or that Eckhart (Tolle) calls Consciousness. Eckhart (author of Oprah Book Club’s pick A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose) doesn’t feel that it is arrogant for me to say, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.’ If Jesus said it, why can’t I?”

But McDowell warned Friday that reliance on this inner consciousness is dangerous because it can justify sin since people should follow what they feel rather than an absolute Truth.

McDowell recalled an episode on an Oprah Winfrey Show last year where former evangelical leader Ted Haggard, who was involved in a gay sex and drug scandal, and his wife Gayle were guests. Gayle said that her husband has struggled with homosexuality since he was 12 years old and that he is trying hard to bring the desires under control and defeat it.

Oprah reacted by standing up and saying she disagrees and that one needs to look within oneself, to find the inner longings and live them out in order to be authentic.

“But wait just a minute,” the respected apologist cautioned. “What if he was a child abuser? Would Oprah say the same thing? To be consistent she has to. What if he was a rapist? She would have to say the same thing.”

McDowell and Sterrett, through examples of what Oprah teaches about spirituality, demonstrate that she cannot be consistent with her belief.

The apologists also addressed the opinion of Oprah and others who subscribe to religious pluralism – which says multiple religions, often contradicting, are equally true – saying that Christians are intolerant for saying Jesus is the only way. The apologists pointed out that people who say they cannot tolerate people who say Jesus is the only way are in fact showing they are intolerant with that statement. If they were as open-minded as they claim, the authors argued, they would tolerate people who disagree with them.

“I am not called in the Bible to be tolerant,” McDowell declared emphatically. “I am not. I refuse to be tolerant. I think it demeans people. I am not called to be tolerant; I am called to be loving. I am not called to tolerate people; I am called to love people.

“When you tolerate someone, it demeans them,” McDowell continued. “When you love someone, it projects value, dignity and worth in that person. As Christians we are called to not only love one another, we are called to love the ungodly.”

McDowell’s strong message about Christians not being called to be tolerant but to love resonated with attendee Denise Wingerd, 30, of Reston Bible Church.“It clicked with me when he said Christians shouldn’t be tolerant,” Wingerd said to The Christian Post after the event. “The Christ standard is to love; to love those who persecute you. That is way above tolerance,” she said.

Wingerd said she used to watch the Oprah Winfrey Show until a “defining moment” made her decide to stop. On one episode, Oprah congratulated a guest for divorcing his wife and leaving his family after coming out that he is gay. Oprah had told the guest it was time to celebrate that he is now his best self.

“I thought to myself, this woman does not deserve my attention,” Wingerd said.

Meanwhile, Melanie McFarland, 29, a member of McLean Bible Church, appreciated McDowell’s argument that if people followed Oprah’s teaching on acting on their inner longings then child-abuse and rape would be acceptable.

“You can rationalize everything in the world,” McFarland said. “He (McDowell) opened my eyes.”

She added, “I don’t watch Oprah but it’s just amazing people take her word and don’t look for the truth.”

“O” God: A Dialogue on Truth on Oprah’s Spirituality is written as a fictional Socratic dialogue where the reader feels he/she is sitting at the table with the characters discussing and comparing Christianity with pantheism and the spiritual teachings promoted by Oprah and her teachers. The book contains many exact quotes from Oprah and the authors she promotes on their views of spirituality.

Included in the back of the book are discussion questions that can serve as a guide in conversations about Oprah’s spirituality in community groups, book clubs, and Sunday school Bible classes.
