“God HAS Begun a Good Work in You”

*Scriptures from the King James Version except where indicated

(Philippians 1:6) Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

The end of 2009 is upon us, although for many of us it’s totally hard to believe. A whole year has come and gone. Well, they say, “Hind sight is 20/20”, so keeping that in mind, “How was your year?” I think that’s a great question, seeing how every New Year’s Eve people from all walks of life make resolutions. Whether it’s pertaining to going on a diet. Or, saving more money, a new year is a marker for CHANGE. But, if we’d done everything right this year, there would be no reason to better ourselves next year…RIGHT?

But, no matter what we did throughout the year or what we resolve to change the next.

If we’ve given our lives to God he’s working on us. He has a purpose for us.

(Romans 8:29) For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

The Lord has begun a GOOD work within us, shaping us into the likeness of his Son Jesus. By his hand and through life, HE is shaping us. Molding us into what HE desires for the purposes we have before us. But he promises he’ll never put more on us than we can bear (1 Corinthians 10:13). Please notice how gentle and caring he is in regards to our growth. Notice how active he is within each of our lives. Note: though the wind is invisible to our eyes we feel its presence. Walk through each day knowing that Gods invisible but capable hands are working to make us better.

YES. The God of heaven and earth is involved with all his children so attentively.

King David wrote these words with amazement…

(Psalms 8:3-4) When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Even, in the mist of our failures we can be confident that the Lord isn’t done with us. We should never lose hope. Satan, will always come to condemn us BUT we need to remember that God has forgiven us so we don’t have to condemn ourselves once we’ve repented. Allow the Grace of the Lord to fill your heart this New Year. Remembering, not to worry. He’s got your life in HIS hands.

With that said…I will leave you with these words of Jesus. Apply them for next year or any other day.

(Matthew 6:34 ESV) “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Mark 5:38-43

December 30, 2009

38 And he (Jesus) cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. 39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. 40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. 41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. 42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. 43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.

‘Miracle’ Mom and Baby ‘Dead’ in Labor, Revived

December 30, 2009

By LEE FERRAN (ABC News)

(Father watched family die, come back to life before his eyes.)

In what is being hailed as a Christmas “miracle,” a young mother died during labor with a still-born baby on Christmas Eve but both mom and baby came back to life just minutes later, before the eyes of the nearly heartbroken, stunned father.

“Half of my family was lying there right in front of me — there’s no other way to say it — dead,” Mike Hermanstorfer told ABC News’ Colorado affiliate KRDO. “I lost all feeling. Once her heartbeat stopped, I felt like mine did too.”

Hermanstorfer’s wife, Tracey, had suffered cardiac arrest while she was in labor at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Spring.

“They were getting ready to put a catheter in and I closed my eyes and don’t remember anything after that,” Tracey said.

She had no pulse, no heartbeat, was not breathing and was turning “gray,” Dr. Stephanie Martin, director of maternal fetal medicine at Colorado’s Memorial Hospital, told CBS News’ Colorado affiliate KKTV. “She was dead.”

“I sat there with my wife’s hand in mine, ice cold,” Mike told KKTV.

After trying to revive Tracey for several minutes to no avail, doctors ordered an emergency C-section with no anesthesia in an attempt to save the baby. The baby was delivered, but it too was not breathing.

But then Mike and the doctors were astounded when Tracey’s pulse returned, just after birth. Doctors quickly wheeled Tracey into surgery to complete the C-section. Then, while the mom was being operated on, other doctors worked to get the baby breathing again as its father held him.

“They actually got him started right in my hands,” Mike said. “That is an amazing feeling.”

Father Claims ‘Absolute Miracle’

Tracey and the baby, which the couple named Coltyn Mikel Hermanstorfer, recovered nicely and left the hospital Monday to join Tracey’s two other children at home. According to KKTV, doctors still do not know what caused Tracey’s cardiac arrest or what brought her back from the brink.

Dr. Martin told Colorado’s The Gazette it’s rare for a woman to suffer cardiac arrest during pregnancy and far rarer for both mother and baby to survive.

Mike has his own theory.

“There’s only one explanation for having either one of them, let along both of them here,” Mike told reporters. “It’s just an absolute miracle.”

Former Lesbian Mom Missing With Daughter Days Before Custody Handover

December 29, 2009

By EMILY FRIEDMAN

(Lisa Miller and her daughter Isabella haven’t been heard from since November.)

A mother and her 7-year-old daughter who is supposed to be handed over to the woman’s former lesbian partner on New Year’s Day have not been seen or heard from in more than a month, according to the judge in the case.

Lisa Miller, who now lives in Winchester, Va., was ordered by a family court judge in Vermont to hand over Isabella on Jan. 1 to Janet Jenkins, Miller’s former partner.

But now, just two days before the handover is supposed to occur, nobody knows where Miller or her daughter is.

“She does not know where her daughter is and she is trying to find her,” Sarah Star, an attorney representing Jenkins, told ABCNews.com.

Star says Jenkins last saw her daughter in January 2009 and spoke with her in March 2009. In his custody ruling, Vermont Family Court Judge William Cohen said nobody has “seen or heard from” Miller and Isabella since Nov. 20.

The judge ordered custody to be switched from Miller to Jenkins after Miller repeatedly failed to allow visitation for her former partner.

An assistant to the lawyers representing Miller, Mathew Staver and Stephen Crampton, told ABCNews.com that the lawyers were “on vacation and unavailable for comment on the matter.”

A Facebook page seemingly set up by Miller appears to show the last posting from the mother being on Dec. 4.

The custody of Isabella has been a point of contention since the couple — who were married in a civil union in Vermont in 2000 — split in 2003, after which Miller denounced homosexuality and became an evangelical Christian.

Miller, who became pregnant with Isabella in 2002 through artificial insemination, said in court documents filed by her attorney on Dec. 16 in an attempt to prevent Jenkins from being awarded full custody, that her daughter would undergo “trauma” because of the “different religious beliefs” she would be exposed to living with Jenkins.

“[Isabella] knows that Ms. Jenkins’ choice to continue to live a homosexual lifestyle is a sin,” says Miller in the court documents. “Ms. Jenkins does not share these beliefs.”

Lisa Miller Fought for Custody of Daughter Before Disappearing

Miller also argues that Jenkins has testified that she would not attend church and would not take Isabella to any church that “taught hatred and bigotry.”

While Jenkins was not made available for an interview with ABCNews.com – her lawyer Star said that she was not speaking the press as to not cause “undue pressure” on her daughter – Star did respond to Miller’s allegations.

“Jenkins has testified repeatedly that she’d leave religious decisions to Ms. Miller to the greatest extent possible,” said Star. “Meaning that the obvious stumbling block is Ms. Jenkins is gay and she won’t personally teach her daughter that she’s going to hell.”

“However, she would allow her to go to a church that even she was not welcome at,” said Star.

Star said that Jenkins filed a missing person’s report today in Vermont in hopes of getting police help to locate Isabella.

“No law has been broken yet, and we’re not accusing Miller of anything, but the reality is that Janet is a parent and she doesn’t know where her daughter is,” said Star.

Asked whether Jenkins believes Isabella could be in danger, Star said, “I know that my client has some concerns about Isabella’s safety and she has concerns about Lisa Miller’s mental stability.”

According to Cheryl Hanna, a professor of constitutional law at Vermont Law School who spoke with the Associated Press, if Miller does not hand over Isabella, the court will likely issue a warrant for her arrest.

Jenkins vows to allow “as liberal contact as possible between Isabella and her other mother,” said Star.

Mississippi Ranked Most Religious State in U.S.

December 29, 2009

By RUSSELL GOLDMAN 12-29-2009, 12:57 PM EST (ABC News)

Southern states top list of most religious states, New England least religious.
Folks in the warm southern states are the most God-fearing people in the country, while people in cold and flinty New England are least likely to believe in God or attend worship services.

Mississippi was named the most religious state in the country, ranking first in four categories: importance of religion; frequency of prayer; the attendance at worship services and the certainty of a belief in God.

Some 82 percent of Mississippians say religion “is very important in their lives,” according to a recently released list compiled by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.

Mississippi was followed by Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee to round out the top five states in which residents said religion was very important.

“Southern states tend to rank near the top of religious commitment,” said Greg Smith, a senior researcher at Pew who compiled the list.

If southern climes make for fiery parishioners, the chill of New England and Alaska seems to have the reverse effect.

New Hampshire and Vermont tied for last place of states whose residents who believed religion was important. Less than 4 in 10 residents or 36 percent of residents said religion was very important.

On average, 56 percent of Americans said religion was very important to them.

Alaska, Massachusetts, Maine and a tie between Rhode Island and Connecticut round out the least religious states.

Southern states typically made up the top five in the other categories, excluding a list that ranked states by how often residents attended religious services.

“In most southern states, frequency of worship attendance meets or exceeds the national average,” Pew found.

Church Attendance Highest in the South

Only Utah broke into the top five, ranking second behind Mississippi, in which 60 percent of residents said they attended worship services at least once a week.

Utah was considered the 12th most religious state overall, but some 57 percent of respondents said they attended services regularly.

Utah’s placement in the overall rankings, Smith said, was a function of the sample size and that statistically it ranked similarly to the Southern states at the top of the list.

“Two thirds of people in Utah said religion is very important. That’s not significantly different from other states that ranked above it,” he said.

South Carolina (54 percent), Louisiana (53 percent), and Alabama (52 percent), ranked third, fourth and fifth for at least weekly church attendance.

Alaskans attend church least of all. Just 22 percent of residents said they went to services at least once a week.

The top 10 states in which residents professed certainty about their belief in God were again almost all Southern, with Mississippi in the No.1 spot and Utah closing out the list at No. 10.

Ninety-one percent of Mississippians said they believed in God.

New Hampshire and Vermont again tied at the bottom of the list, with the fewest residents who believe in God. Just 54 percent of residents there were certain God existed.

On average 71 percent of Americans said they were “absolutely certain” of their belief in God.

At least 85 percent of residents in Mississippi, South Carolina and Alabama were certain of God’s existence, versus less than 6 in 10 respondents in Maine, Connecticut/Rhode Island and Vermont/New Hampshire.

The list was compiled from data in Pew’s 2007 Religious Landscape Survey. More 35,000 people across the country were polled for the survey.

Charles Spurgeon Devotional 12-30-2009

What think ye of Christ?

(Matthew 22:42)

The great test of your soul’s health is, What think you of Christ? Is he to you fairer than the children of men-the chief among ten thousand-the altogether lovely? Wherever Christ is thus esteemed, all the faculties of the spiritual man exercise themselves with energy. I will judge of your piety by this barometer: does Christ stand high or low with you? If you have thought little of Christ, if you have been content to live without his presence, if you have cared little for his honour, if you have been neglectful of his laws, then I know that your soul is sick-God grant that it may not be sick unto death! But if the first thought of your spirit has been, how can I honour Jesus? If the daily desire of your soul has been, O that I knew where I might find him! I tell you that you may have a thousand infirmities, and even scarcely know whether you are a child of God at all, and yet I am persuaded, beyond a doubt, that you are safe, since Jesus is great in your esteem. I care not for thy rags, what thinkest thou of his royal apparel? I care not for thy wounds, though they bleed in torrents, what thinkest thou of his wounds? are they like glittering rubies in thine esteem? I think none the less of thee, though thou liest like Lazarus on the dunghill, and the dogs do lick thee-I judge thee not by thy poverty: what thinkest thou of the King in his beauty? Has he a glorious high throne in thy heart? Wouldest thou set him higher if thou couldest? Wouldest thou be willing to die if thou couldest but add another trumpet to the strain which proclaims his praise? Ah! then it is well with thee. Whatever thou mayest think of thyself, if Christ be great to thee, thou shalt be with him ere long.

Though all the world my choice deride,

Yet Jesus shall my portion be;

For I am pleased with none beside,

The fairest of the fair is he

“Ex-KKK Leader to Minister to Historically Black Church Body”

By Joshua A. Goldberg|Christian Post Reporter

A former national leader of the White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan will be conducting evangelism campaigns and engaging in the ministry of racial reconciliation as an ordained minister in the largest body of black churchgoers in America. Close View Full ImageJohnny Lee Clary, 50, was ordained last month to serve within the six-million-member Church of God in Christ and hopes to educate people on the destructiveness of division and inequality.

“When the day comes for me to make my journey home, I hope to be remembered not as the former National Leader Of the Klan, but as a man who saw wrong and tried to right it, to build a better world to leave for our children, both black and white,” Clary says. Though the historically black denomination has a few white ministers, Bishop George D. McKinney, who ordained Clary last month, told the Tulsa World “it’s not every day that we get a former klansman.

” “We’re making history,” added Clary, who currently lives in Miami. “We’re building a bridge of racial reconciliation, and what better way to do that than with a former KKK leader ministering in a black church that boasts over 6 million members?” he told the Oklahoman. “I hope I can have a great impact.” Clary had joined the KKK at the age of 14 after his father committed suicide and his mother abandoned him. And for 16 years, Clary advanced in the racist organization, all the way up to becoming an imperial wizard. After going through a time of torment, anger, and disgust, Clary left the KKK and struggled to make an honest living. He turned to God after feelings of guilt led him to depression and on the verge of committing suicide.

He has since been speaking at a number of schools and churches across the nation, and appeared in several television programs, including Geraldo Rivera, Montel Williams, Phil Donahue, and The 700 Club. Clary has also appeared on the Billy Graham Radio Show. “Yes I made mistakes in life, and a person cannot go back in time and change the past, but he can certainly do something about today in order to build a better tomorrow,” Clary says today. Though Clary will likely continue to travel as a guest speaker, the California-born minister hopes to one day oversee his own Church of God in Christ congregation. In any case, it’s clear what Clary intends to do with his life. “I believe I have something to contribute in the area of racial reconciliation,” he says. “I’m going to spend the rest of my life building bridges and bringing people together.” It has been roughly three decades now since Clary left the KKK.

“Sharing Your Gifts”

December 29, 2009

*Scriptures from the King James Version except where indicated

Over the years, I’ve been blessed to meet wonderful people. Each having their own special qualities and God-given gifts. Sometimes, as I step back and try to look at the bigger picture… I see God’s people woven together into one huge tapestry being used by the Almighty Himself. I have friends who are photographers, artists, Musicians, mechanics, and doctors.
Different people, gifted in different ways and areas in life. In their way, they make a difference to the many people around them. But, it is God who directs us into the areas where we’re most needed.

(Psalms 48:14) For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.
Whatever gifts you posses, they’re important and necessary for your purpose and journey in life. The gift itself, may introduce you to people who under normal circumstances you may have ever met.
The Lord orders our steps and leads us into situations to touch others lives. Maybe to give someone hope, or just be a light in a dark place. Problem is, sometimes we tend to under value our gifts. We can literally take for granted that there maybe someone who needs our gift….even as an encouragement. But the Lord says…
(Acts 10:15) …What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
I personally know an elderly (Christian) woman who makes phone calls to other saints simply to see how they’re doing (Offering prayer if needed). Friends, this is a valuable resource. How many times in life have challenges arisen and weighed so heavily on your mind and heart. THEN SUDDENLY someone comes along and says, “Don’t give up”. Well, that’s what this lady does and I’m sure it’s one of her inner gifts. It’s a simple but powerful ministry. One that says “Hey I’m thinking about you and keeping your family in my prayers”. In today’s world, where people are often focused on their own families for survival and necessity. Showing Godly concern is definitely going against the grain. But, at the same time our encouragement can fuel an empty soul another day. Won’t you consider being a light in someone’s life today?
As you start off your day, think about your natural God-given gifts and ask the Lord how you may use them in HIS service. I’m sure someone around you will blessed and encouraged if you do.
Be Blessed my friends-

Megachurch Pastor, Comic Book Artist Take on End Times

December 29, 2009

By Lillian Kwon|Christian Post Reporter

A southern California megachurch pastor has teamed up with popular comic book artist Rob Liefeld to create a graphic novel series on the end times.

Phil Hotsenpiller, teaching pastor of Yorba Linda Friends Church, describes the biblically-inspired series as “24 meets The Da Vinci Code meets Left Behind.”

Titled Armageddon Now, the series merges biblical prophecies about the last days with current events.

It’s not intended to be a theological book though Hotsenpiller has eschatological knowledge. Rather, it serves as entertainment both for Christians and non-believers.

But it isn’t purely all just for fun either.

With a professional artist like Liefeld and a story like the Bible, the megachurch pastor views Armageddon Now as a powerful tool for God’s Kingdom and a “cultural key.”

“It seems every generation is consumed with or concerned about the end of the world,” Hotsenpiller told The Christian Post. “Everybody seems to [think] ‘well, I don’t want the world to end but when is it going to happen?’”

“I think there’s something in our DNA that recognizes ‘there’s something wrong with the world and it’s probably going to end by one of a multitude of ways. And now we just have to figure out which way it’s going to end and can we somehow divert that or delay that so that I don’t have to go through it?’”

Hotsenpiller realized the widespread interest on the topic of end times when he held his first Prophecy Conference in 2006. It was a Labor Day weekend and he didn’t know what to expect. Some 7,000 people showed up. They heard him speak about the Islamic emergence, the antichrist, rapture, the seven-year Great Tribulation and the final judgment. At that time, Liefeld was in the audience.

Liefeld, whose works include  X-Force and Youngblood, actually regularly attended Yorba Linda Friends Church but Hotsenpiller had never met him and was unaware of who he was.

Following the Prophecy Conference, Liefeld approached the pastor and proposed working together to produce a graphic novel.

“I had been developing some biblical projects; I’m a huge fan of the epic stories in the Bible. But once I heard Phil’s seminar, I knew this project should take the lead,” the artist said, according to Comic Book Resources.

The first installment, titled Armageddon Now: World War 3, was released last January. It begins with a terrorist attack on New York City and Los Angeles and introduces the heroes, including Lt. Col. John Corbin, a military investigator who is dispatched to the Middle East in order to bring the conspirators of the U.S. terror attacks to justice. At the end, readers are introduced to a British political leader that readers are led to identify as the antichrist.

The second installment, Armageddon Now: The Beast, focuses on the antichrist and the mystery of the constellation Orion as it relates to the future of mankind. The latest graphic novel is set to be released soon.

Scripture is replete with references to the antichrist and his work, Hotsenpiller said. Initially, he is going to be well received by this world, the teaching pastor detailed.

“The beast is the antichrist. This beast … is an incarnation of Satan himself,” he said during the most recent Prophecy Conference, which has continued to draw large audiences. “And yet he comes on the scene charming, brilliant, intelligent, well-spoken, captivating the entire world with his presence, with his charisma.”

While the graphic novel series isn’t filled with preaching, Hotsenpiller believes it can serve as a bridge for those who may not be interested in church or God but are curious about end times. The series can help people understand the Bible, especially the prophecies, and relate to it, or at least create a talking point, he said.

The Yorba Linda pastor says there’s a lot of misinformation and wrong attitudes among Christians regarding the last days possibly because not enough pastors are addressing it.

“I think some Christians actually seem to exasperate that whole point in that they want the world to hurry up and end or they’re looking forward to it,” he noted. “And I don’t think that’s a Christian perspective.

“I think the Christian perspective is one that says ‘we have prophetic Scriptures that tell us about the end of time. It’s not that we want the world to end but we want to be prepared and, in the meantime, we should be doing all we can to preserve our world, to be kind to one another, to do good and to preserve peace … and to live out a true honest Christian life.”

Armageddon Now: World War 3 will be adapted into a feature film. Hotsenpiller and Liefeld are in the early process of gathering producers and have meetings scheduled with major film studios in January 2010.

The Armageddon Now book series is created by 12 Gates Productions and published by Image Comics.

Pastor Chuck Smith Hospitalized After ‘Mini Stroke’

By Joshua A. Goldberg|Christian Post Reporter

Southern California megachurch pastor Chuck Smith was taken to the hospital over the weekend after having what doctors described as a “mini stroke.”

Close friend and fellow pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, Calif., reported Sunday that Smith, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa in Santa Ana, Calif., was taken to the hospital late Saturday night and urged prayers for the 82-year-old minister.

“Please be in prayer for Pastor Chuck Smith,” Laurie announced Sunday morning.

“[L]et’s remember this beloved man of God in prayer, that the Lord would touch, bless and heal him,” he added.

Smith, who discipled church leaders such as Laurie and Skip Heitzig of Calvary of Albuquerque in New Mexico, is a recognized speaker at pastors conferences and has authored and co-authored several books.

Ordained as a pastor for the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, Smith started pastoring Calvary Chapel in 1965, when the congregation was only 25-large.

Calvary Chapel has since grown to have a weekly attendance of 9,500, making it the 67th largest church in America, according to the Hartford Institute for Religion Research.

It has also been responsible for more than 1,500 church plants.

Though Smith was Calvary Chapel’s second pastor, he is widely credited as founding the church.
